Volunteering Brings Joy

Seniors and children provide lessons to take back to Africa
Volunteering never meant much to me until I came to the U.S. During the months that I have spent here, nothing made me feel more accomplished than helping people. At first, I had no idea what to do or where to go to volunteer, but with time and research, I was able to find one of my current hobbies and passions, volunteering.
It was with great joy in my heart that I decided to continue volunteering, even after completing the required 100 hours (for a certificate). During March and April, I had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer at places that are filled with happiness and love. The first place was a senior assisted living facility to which I often go and do fun activities such as painting the ladies’ nails, doing arts and crafts with the residents, playing games, and celebrating annual events.
The air in all of the rooms is always overflowing with great memories and wise stories residents have to tell. I love listening to them and spending time becoming wiser with all the advice they give me.

The second place I volunteer is my local church, where I provide childcare services to little kids. It brings out my playful side and makes me feel like I’m seven, not 17 years old.
We play games, run around, and just exhaust ourselves with fun! That is what volunteering is about. The little gestures you do for other people bring joy. That is why, to me, going to these places is very important. I know it makes a big difference in the community to have someone helping out, being a friend, or simply being there.
Volunteering is definitely something I want to keep doing when I go back to my country, because I believe that just a little help from someone who cares can change the world.
